What kind of animal is the turtle?

Turtles are reptiles, just like snakes and lizards. Their most famous feature, the shell, isn't something they wear like clothing. It is part of their body: the ribs and backbone grow wide and join together to form it. That's why a turtle can never take its shell off. When danger comes, it simply pulls its head and legs inside to stay safe.

Turtles are grouped by where they live. Tortoises live on land, freshwater turtles live in rivers and ponds, and sea turtles swim across the open ocean. Instead of teeth, turtles have a hard mouth shaped like a bird's beak, which they use to eat plants or small animals. Because they can't warm their own bodies, you'll often see them climbing onto sunny rocks to bask.

Turtles are famous for living a long time. Some, like the Galápagos giant tortoise, live for more than 100 years. Sea turtles lay their eggs on sandy beaches, and the temperature of the sand decides whether the babies become boys or girls.

• Start by drawing a big half-moon shape for the shell, then fill it with lots of hexagons.
• Add a head, four legs and a short tail peeking out from the shell, and you've got a turtle.
