What kind of animal is the panda?
Giant pandas are a kind of bear that lives in bamboo forests high in the mountains of China. With black patches around their eyes, black ears and legs, and white bodies, they are among the most loved animals in the world. They were once very rare and endangered, but thanks to many years of protection, their numbers are slowly growing.
Although pandas are bears, almost all of their food is bamboo. But their stomachs work like those of meat-eating animals, so they get only a little nutrition from bamboo. That's why they spend most of their waking hours eating, and the rest of the time relaxing or sleeping to save energy.
A panda's front paw has a wrist bone that sticks out and works like a thumb. This "pseudo-thumb" lets it hold bamboo tightly while it eats. A newborn panda cub is tiny, only about 1/900 of its mother's weight, and it is pink with almost no fur.
